Limited, Birmingham: A Rare Westley Richards Falling Block Single Shot 1873 Deeley & Edge patent Military Carbine chambered to the .450 No. 1 Carbine 1 1/2" cartridge (.500/.450 No.1 Carbine), Made about 1875, 22" Henry's patent rifled barrel, Military carbine rear sight with an elevation graduated slide, The action body is marked on the right side "Deeley-Edge Patent" and left side is marked "Westley Richards Co. Limited Birmingham", On the right side a lever safety that locks the trigger and locks the underlever from opening, Straight grip stock of 14 1/8" over a steel military butt plate with a trapdoor that includes the tip for the cleaning rod, 7 lbs. 9 oz., Full length forend wood with a steel cap, Barrel band near the muzzle with a sling eye, Original full length cleaning rod with the tip in the buttstock, This is an original gun, Original barrel blue at 45%, A nice patina remains on the action body, Original stock finish at 60%, The wood remains very solid, The bore is very good to near excellent with sharp rifling the entire way. The cartridge had a load of 55 grains of black powder with a 380 grain bullet. This cartridge was among the first to be loaded with the solid drawn brass cases that were the innovation of Westley Richards. This is a rare example of this piece as nearly all of them existing today have been altered in one manner or another. The action number is 396 and is stamped on the face of the action and the barrel has the identical number. It has the name "Millward" stamped on the barrel, which has got to be John Millward as he was a gun barrel maker on Lambeth St. in Birmingham and on 24 Batty St. in 1841.
