Description:
Griffin & Howe Custom Mauser 7x57 Rifle
1920's, ENGRAVED, GORGEOUS!

General Specs: Griffin & Howe, Year 1928, 7x57, 8 1/2 lbs, Bolt Action Rifle
Serial Number: 251

Griffin & Howe is arguably the most noteworthy custom rifle maker in America.  Created in 1923 and committed to building the best rifles for the American sportsman, G & H was a great success.  Purchased in 1930 by Abrecombie & Fitch, many famous and powerful outdoorsmen counted on G & H to build fine, custom, well decorated rifles for their needs, among them Ernest Hemingway, Clark Gable, Jack O'Connor, Gary Cooper, Robert Ruark, Dwight Eisenhower, and Bill Ruger.  You can find vintage G & H rifles that range from plain and utilitarian for around $4500 to fine works of art that surpass $30,000.  G & H still builds fine rifles today.

This rifle was No. 251, built in the late 1920's on a Mauser action, and it is in wonderful original condition.  There are many special features on this custom rifle that have become the hallmark for G & H including  gorgeous English walnut stock with a double shadow line raised cheek panel on the left side, checkered and engraved steel butt plate with trap door, engraved with a full game scene on the floor plate, fine english scroll on the trigger guard, engraved and stippled front bridge, engraved band at base of barrel, all screws engraved, engraved border at the base of the front sight ramp, all crisp and sharp.  There is a quarter rib with 3 folding leaf sights, a folding Lyman peep at the end of the bolt, a banded and stippled ramped front sight, and a G & H side mount scope base ready for a G & H mount and rings.  The 25" barrel has a mirror bore with sharp rifling and no corrosion at the throat, front sight and sling banded to the barrel, and a clean crown.  Stock is mounted with European style sling swivels and has borderless flor-de-lis checkering that is crisp and clean, wrap around on the forend, and a neat schnabel forend tip.  Bolt is bent for a low scope mount and the handle is flattened on the backside and nicely checkered, as is the trigger blade.  No pits or scratches to speak of, all in lovely condition.

What a great rifle in a most respected, soft shooting, versatile, and accurate 7mm Mauser cartridge.  These guns will always maintain their value as you enjoy shooting a great American vintage classic rifle at your chosen quarry.

ADDITIONAL INFO:

1.  Is the base that is installed on this rifle already milled to accept (a presumably available) G&H removable base and rings, or does the removable base have to be fitted or further milled by the G&H shop? to the base on the rifle - or vice versa?

The removable mount and rings are prefit to the base.  They are not easy to find but they do come up.  Sometimes you will find them attached to old scopes, like an Alaskan.

2.  Also, how is the base installed on this rifle's receiver? Is it with screws under the woodline, or pins, or solder, or? If screwed or pinned, are the screws and/or pins visible in the bolt lug raceway when bolt is withdrawn?

Installed with screws under the woodline.  The screw heads come from the outside in, with the tips barely visible when you remove the bolt.

2.  Is the pistol grip cap steel? If so, does it have a trapdoor and if so, is there perhaps a replacement front sight blade/bead in that trap hollow?

Grip cap looks like hard rubber or horn, with no trapdoor.

3.  I noticed that you mentioned in the listing that the trigger was two stage. That is what I prefer. If you have had the rifle out of the stock, are the trigger and sear straight/typical Mauser or have there been any modifications or replacements?

I am not familiar enough with the Mauser triggers to be able to say.  I do know the trigger is the trigger installed originally in 1928 by G & H.  The gun has not been altered at all since its original manufacture.

4.   From looking at the photos, it appears to me that this rifle was built on a large ring Mauser, not a small ring; can you confirm or correct me?

This is a large ring Mauser.

5.   Do you know if this rifle's receiver is a standard length or intermediate length Mauser?

This is a standard length '98 Mauser action.

6.  Since it is possible this rifle was fired for a time with corrosive primers, can you advise whether there is any corrosive primer pitting ring around the firing pin hole on the bolt face?

There is no corrosion on the bolt face or in the chamber/throat area.

7.  Can you advise what the wording on the back side of the safety lever says?

            Buehler

8.   I take it that to remove the stock, one would have to unscrew and remove the front banded sling swivel base; is there any escutcheon surrounding the steel part of that swivel base that protrudes through the forend?

there is no escutcheon at the front sling base.
