This is an 1883 dated, carbine that has a smooth plum-brown mixing with a dark pewter patina along the barrel with some traces of original blue on a few of the protected areas and a fairly bright gray patina on the receiver. The bolt matches the condition of the receiver and has some mild freckling on the handle while the trigger guard and other stock furniture have the same dark plum-brown color as the barrel. Mottled gray freckling is also present on the sliding dust cover. The matching numbered stock has an excellent added varnish finish with scattered light handling marks and small surface blemishes. The carbine comes with a correct bayonet (numbered to a different gun), which rides in a channel under the barrel (reversed) when not in use. These are well made arms and are seldom seen with their bayonets. This example is in excellent condition and would make a stellar addition to any collection.
