Description:
NSN, .69 caliber, 39 1/8” barrel with a dark bore. This is a handsome musket with matching 1803 barrel and lock dates. The barrel was one of those which had the bayonet permanently attached when originally built at Springfield and later shortened to provide for a standard, removable bayonet. The barrel breech is marked with the letters "PM" and "T.P. 1803" (T.P. is the mark of inspector Thomas Palmer who is listed as an armory sub-inspector during 1808-09), and forward of the cock is the "(eagle)/TP/US". The stock has the early type deeply grooved comb and is marked on the left cheek flat with a once deeply struck "NH/US” state property marking that became shallower when the wood was sanded at a later date. The word "Springfield" does not appear anywhere on the lock or barrel. The muzzle shows distinct evidence of having been cut for bayonet removal and is a bit uneven. At some point the U.S. decided to give these weapons to various states and removed the bayonets. This example may also have had a replacement lock fitted which would account for the word "Springfield" being missing. The trumpet shaped ramrod has had the threaded end removed. According to Flayderman, regarding the Type I muskets, about 25,000 were built with 15,000 having the bayonets brazed on. All were cut off and shortened circa 1812-13. At what point these were given or sold to New Hampshire we do not know but it would be after the bayonet removal. This musket now measures 53 3/4" overall which is slightly longer than the average. The right of the stock now has a period brass "daisy" that was nicely inlet into the stock. The iron buttplate is likewise “NH” marked on the face with an additional rack/issue mark, "F6", and "U. STATES". The state marking is faint, but still legible, as are the others. This is an original, early US musket as issued to New Hampshire, and was certainly in service during the War of 1812. For reference see "Springfield Armory shoulder Weapons 1795-1968" by Robert W.D. Ball. Several variations of these muskets are pictured on pages 13-22 with no two being alike as to dimensions or markings. Antique
