Westley Richards & Co. Ltd, Birmingham, England: This is a Westley Richards Seeley Patent Ejector (British Patent #8335) 12 gauge rebuilt after 1954 with 27" Ejector Dovetail Lump barrels with Birmingham Nitro Proof, proved at 3 tons for 2 ½” chambers but with long forcing cones, the bores at .729” with chokes at Imp.Cyl. and Mod. The gun has been shooting 2 3/4” 1 oz. shells on the range since Westley Richards sleeved it.

This is a doll’s-head action, with two triggers and a field forend with a Deeley release, open pistol grip stock with long inlaid pointed tang (wood-to-metal fit is perfect) with a vacant gold monogram oval ready for the owner’s initials.  Forend is finished with a horn tip inlaid with a widow’s peak, reminiscent of the maker’s best guns. Dimensions are 14 1/2 x 1 7/16” x 2 1/16” over 7/8" leather-covered pad with 7/16” cast-off for the right hand; weight is 6 lbs. 8 oz.

It is inscribed “WESTLEY RICHARDS & Co.” on both sides of the frame just under the water table; “SEELEY PATENT EJECTOR 8335” is inscribed on the water table; “WESTLEY RICHARDS & Co. is inscribed around the top lever; and “SAFE” is inscribed and gold-filled on the top tang – an automatic safety.

The smooth concave rib is inscribed “WESTLEY RICHARDS & Co. LONDON” as Westley had, as far back as 1815, opened a retail outlet at 170 New Bond Street in London, although their guns were made in Birmingham.

This shotgun holds several special places in the history of shotguns. Westley Richards & Co. patented the doll’s-head action in 1862, the Anson & Deeley self-cocking action (this model) in 1875, and the Deeley finger-lever forend latch in 1873 – all features of this gun. This design by Westley Richards was the first successful boxlock action and has been copied by everyone ever since. According to Geoffrey Boothroyd in his book, Sidelocks & Boxlocks,

“The Westley Richards factory as it is today still builds the finest boxlock guns, but it should be placed on record that a fixed-lock 12-bore (boxlock) has a delivery time of about a year.”

This piece has nice wood with warm colors, and some character (fiddleback figure showing on the right profile). The wood remains as stout as it was when made. After the reconditioning by Westley Richards, the bright & vivid case colors remain at 90%, the original barrel black of the sleeved barrels is at 98%, The original wood finish is at 95%, The checkering at 95%, The bores are bright and shiny and the barrels outside are excellent plus and ring with a pronounced chime; come cased in English leather trunk case. Wall thicknesses: Left .032” and Right .033” – another lifetime of shooting remains.

This would be a perfect uplands’ game gun and would be the envy of everyone in the field.
