Description:
This is a very nice original model 1884 Springfield Trapdoor infantry rifle in 45-70 caliber. I aquired this rifle recently at a gun show in northern Wisconsin. The man I bought this gun from said it was in his family for over 100 years. He said his Great Grandfather was in the Wisconsin National Guard, 32nd Red Arrow Division, and when the trapdoors were being replaced by 30-40 Krags members of the guard could buy the trapdoors for personal use. He hand selected this rifle and it has been in the family ever since. The rifle was used extensively to hunt white tail deer in northern Wisconsin and many trophy bucks were bagged with the gun. The seller said he was too old to carry the gun himself and had no one to hand it down to so he wanted to sell it.

This is one of the nicest original Trapdoors that I have come upon. It appears to be 100% original and not a pieced together gun. The finish is showing some patina which is appropriate for its age. The original bluing is excellent. The stock is excellent with only a few chips and scratches. The stock finish appears to be original with no additional finish added. There is no cartouche visible. However, If you look at the photos carefully you will see light finish wear on the wrist where a cartouche would be and a residue from some sort of wrap or cheek pad in the same area (common on old Wisconsin deer rifles). there is also light finish wear to the stock ahead of the trigger guard. Both areas of finish wear are typical carring points for white tail deer hunters, most of whom would be wearing gloves in Wisconsin.

This gun has an excellent bore with deep rifling all the way to muzzle crown. This should be a very accurate shooter. The original Buffington is in perfect working condition with smooth adjustments for windage and elevation. The action is smooth and tight and appears to have been meticulously maintained. There is no rust or damage evident.

If you want a very nice honest original Trapdoor with one family ownership dating back to when the gun released from the Wisconsin National Guard,  I believe this is one. I have no written provenance but the guns condition supports the sellers story very well.
