Description:
AMERICAN SOUTHERN MARKET PERCUSSION SAW HANDLED DUELLER OR DUELING PISTOL BY VAN WART SON & CO. OF BIRMINGHAM CIRCA 1840’S. Well known British supplier to the South utilizing dealers such as Hyde and Goodrich of New Orleans, Louisiana and with this pistol recently found in Ethel, Louisiana. Van Wart also was a listed supplier of military goods to the State of South Carolina, including uniform buttons. This is a particularly fine and distinctive example with features obviously incorporated to appeal to the American Southern Gentleman of the 1840’s. The walnut half length stock has a small Deringer style checkered bag shaped grip and American style “cap trap” in the butt as well as the German silver ramrod rail and the stirrup ramrod retainer. These are all quite American and in the Deringer fashion of the day. Measures 14” o/a with 9” octagon, deeply rifled .52 caliber barrel signed “London” and having double silver bands at the breech. Single set trigger. Engraved Deringer style “Back Action” lock with hammer safety. Plate signed “VAN WART/SON & CO.” Beautifully floral engraved breech and tang. Engraved German silver trigger guard with finger hook. And fern finial. All original and in very good condition. Stock with all the original finish and metal with the original dark patina. Very crisp markings and engraving. Working order and very good bore with deep rifling. Scarce and a well documented supplier to the South with several new references to Van Wart in the very fine new book “THE ENGLISH CONNECTION” by Russ Pritchard, Jr. and C. A. Huey.
