An unusually nice example of this Pre-Civil War military musket. The metal parts have toned to a silky smooth brownish/ grey patina. Which in fact is quite even throughout the gun. There is no really apparent rust or pits. The lock plate has the Eagle over the U.S. Springfield and is clearly dated 1861. The lock does have a few small scattered patches of pinpricks. The hammer, un-battered nipple and trigger assembly are also a bright silky smooth patina as is the proper U.S. stamped buttplate. The Walnut stock while showing some oil staining is in super condition. There are some small scattered dings but no chip or cracks. The gun has the proper sling swivels and tulip head ramrod. It is really quite a lovely example of the very earliest of the U.S. percussion muskets. A piece of American history that would look rather handsome in any collection or in the field at a reenactment.
