Description:
SOLD....Antique 1873 Winchester. 44-40. Special order 28" octagon barrel. Here is a nice 1873 in the very sought after 44-40 caliber. Gun also has a special order 28" barrel. Very impressive. The S/N is 107337 and made in 1882.. so a very early 3rd model. It has the carry over feratures of the 2nd models..There are no caliber markings on the barrel or the brass carrier as is totally correct for these very early 3rd models. Still retains the 2nd model type rear sight that is a bit shorter than the later 3rd models. The bore is very good with strong rifling all the way through. Just shows some light roughness but NO big deep pits or craters. NO rings or bulges. It shoots just fine. NO backed out primers or bulged cases. The mechanics of course are excellent... It feeds , fires and ejects just the way it is suppose to. The metal is very nice and is a smooth medium brown patina. No pitting. Never cleaned on or messed with. Has two very small 1/16" slots by the lever screw. Probably someone trying to get the lever screw out that did not know what they were doing. You see this more than you want on some of these ole guns. Has the original dust cover that is loose as most all are but still retracts with the lever throw. These should always be pulled back by hand though to save from wear. The markings are all very good. Has the original shorter 2nd model rear sight  as mentioned. The front sight is a later Winchester sight with the set screw on the right side. I am not real sharp on these front sights but I think the earlier ones did not have the set screw. It is still and old original Winchester sight.  The wood is decent on this ole 73. The forearm has a couple very old putty repairs that do not look bad at all. It also has a couple tight grain splits that are solid and a full length grain split  that runs from the forearm cap to the receiver that has been glued long ago and is very solid. It still fits tight to the gun with no movement anywhere. Nothing is going anywhere and are all still solid but I want to mention everything I see in my honest descriptions. The butt stock is very good with no splits or cracks. NO repairs or any issues on the stock.. Does show that it has pulled away from the upper and lower tangs a bit but again, all is solid and tight. You should be able to see this on my photos but please ask for more photos if not. I want you to see wnat you are buying. I want happy customers. All in all , not a bad gun at .. Just shows honest wear and tear that these guns will show that have been used. It is in the right caliber with the special order 28" barrel that is really neat and very impressive.
