Description:
NSN, .62 Caliber (approx. 20 Bore), 36" barrel with a good bore that has dark freckling and pitting towards the muzzle. This is a very nice gun that has a smooth browned finish along the barrel with some mild silvering along the edges of the breech facets and on the "wedding band" transition to round. The breech has both a white metal band along the top and matching surround at the touch-hole. A further impressed oval-shaped marking is present on the top flat: "R. JOHNSTON/DUMFRIES"; and is also repeated on the lockplate: " R. JOHNSTON". The roller-frizzen equipped lock has been cleaned to bright and has a light pewter gray patina throughout with specks of dark blue-black along the edges and projections. The mechanism is fully functional but does sometimes stick on the half-cock notch. The walnut stock has been lightly sanded with an additional varnish finish applied over minor nicks and small handling blemishes as well as some with-the-grain cracks at the lockplate, running forward from the lock screw bolster, and at the barrel tang. There are some further linear grain separations along the right side of the butt which are not full-fledged cracks but can be felt when a hand is passed over the surface of the wood. The triggerguard has a typical pineapple finial with light engraving and an added color case-hardened finish. The metal-tipped ramrod is a later addition but matches the gun quite nicely. This is a very good British fowler and would make a great decorative accent piece or addition to any collection of British sporting guns. Antique
