Description:
Inv. 5481

Mass. Arms Smith Saddle Ring Carbine Percussion, Caliber .50, Serial Number 202XX.

A really lovely example of this little Civil War saddle ring Carbine. The finish is a mixture of a very smooth blue and ray patina. There is no real rust or pits anywhere. The numbered parts all match. The frame is properly marked Mass. Arms Chicopee Falls, Address Poultney and Trimble Baltimore Maryland and Smith's Patent June 23, 1857. The left side of the barrel on the flat There M/P for the inspectors mark. The wood is in rather good condition. However the gun has seen a lot of time in a cavalry scabbard and both sides’ top edges of the forearm which were very thin to begin with are worn down. There are some small slivers missing from the butt stock at the back of the receiver. The lifter mechanism is really great and locks the breech tightly. The Hammer, trigger, and lock mechanism are in super condition and function crisply. The nipple is not battered. The bore is quite bright with about 80% sharp rifling. There are some small patches of graying scattered about midway down the barrel. This is a really lovely example of a popular cavalry carbine.
