Description:
Inv. 5451

Sharps U.S. Percussion Carbine Model 1863, Caliber .52, Serial Number 249XX.

A beauty indeed. The barrel's finish has toned to a very even shiny patina it is stamped near the breech Model 1863. The breech assembly has mostly silvered showing little rust or pitting overall. The left side of the breech above the saddle ring the Sharps Patent dates are stamped. The lock side is stamped above the hammer, R.B. Lawrence Pat. April 12th 1859. To the rear of the hammer is C. Sharps Pat. Oct. 5th 1859. The lock is fitted for a tape primer. The saddle ring and bar are still intact, the fastening plate is stamped E.A.W. for the military inspector. The fore end still retains most of the original lacquer, however there is some darkening due to age and oil. There are no splits or chips and very few dings. The buttstock is in similar condition, but does have a darkened depressed line about an inch wide (shown in the pics). It appears as if something heavy may have pressed on it for a long period of time. The butt plate is I deeply aged and pitted as if it came in contact with blood. I don't believe it was water as the stock is not split or swollen. The top of the buttplate is "M" stamped and the walnut comb has the rack number 31. The gun locks up tight, all parts are proper and the gun seems to function properly. The sights are complete. The rear still has the slider and the front the brass insert. The bore is really surprisingly bright with sharp grooves and lands. There is some light surface graying present. The gun should be a good shooter or a beauty in a Civil War collection.
