Description:
RARE SMITH & WESSON U.S. CAVALRY 1ST. MODEL SCHOFIELD REVOLVER SERIAL NO. 999 CIRCA 1875. Recently found and never on the market before. Part of the first order of Schofield .45 caliber U.S. Cavalry revolvers with a high probability that it was shipped to the either the 4th, 9th or 10th Cavalry Regiments all serving out of FT. Sill, Indian Territory or one of the Texas and New Mexico Garrisons. All of these Regiments were heavily engaged in actions against hostile Comanche, Kiowa, So. Cheyenne, Apache and other tribes in the Southwest. Amongst the most sought after of all U.S. Cavalry Indian Wars items. All original and complete and in very good condition. Grey patina metal with spots of modest salt and pepper and corrosion where it lay in a holster for many, many years. Right side of barrel stamped “SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD, MASS. U.S.A.” with patent dates and the right side stamped “SCHOFIELD’S PAT. APR. 22ND 1873”. Original walnut two piece grips with right grip serial numbered on underside “999”. Underside of the left flat carved with the initials “WN”. This is the only serial number visible as the butt has become corroded over the number and the “US” stamp. The number on the back of the cylinder is also no longer visible. The frame however still has the “L” Government Sub-inspector’s stamp on the floor plate and the barrel lug is also stamped “L” and has the final inspection “P” proof both on the underside. Bottom of the right grip flat is sub-inspected with the “L” inspection mark but the cartouche is not visible. Although cylinder does not rotate when cocked it does turn. Good bore and chambers. 100% original and very rare and historic.
