#6126, James Woodward & Sons, 64 St. James's Street, London, S.W.: James Woodward 16 Bore Boxlock Extractor Completed in 1911, 29" steel barrels with rib extension third bite, .669 .014 & .019" (Mod. & Imp.Mod.), 2 3/4", Wall thickness on the right at .028" & the left .027", Birmingham Proved and then reproved in London 2011 with the proper reproof marks, Double triggers, Scalloped frame, 75% coverage of unique scroll engraving, Very nice wood with excellent black/brown contrast, Splinter forend with an Anson release, Straight hand stock at 14 11/16" x 1 3/8 x 2 1/8" over a checkered butt, Slight cast-off for the right hand, 5 lbs. 14 oz., Traces of original case colors remain with a very nice patina, The barrel blue at 97%, The stock finish remains at 85%, The flat checkering remains at 40%; The barrels are excellent inside and out, these are solid barrels in every respect, It is cased in a leather cornered canvas trunk with a proper trade label. The barrels remain on the face and they ring with a nice chime. This is a nice boxlock game gun with one of London's best names on the whole of the gun. /////////////////////////////////// James Woodward is one of the most prestigious names of all the London gunmakers. He started in the trade with Charles Moore Gunmaker in 1827 where he became the head finisher and later it turned into Moore & Woodward. In 1872 it became James Woodward & Sons at the address of this gun. In 1937 they moved to 28 Bury Street and in 1948 Tom Purdey acquired Woodward as a going concern. In 1913 Woodward started production of their now famous O/U and along with Boss it was the finest design produced in the British gun trade. Purdey acquired Woodward because of this O/U design and it became the Woodward style of O/U's at Purdey. Woodward was known as producing best quality guns only but did produce and sell plainer quality pieces. This gun is a fine example of their efforts in that regard.
