Excellent Plus Condition, R.Vascoinc engraved
Just as Sig Arms teamed with Sauer for the great Sig Sauer pistols, just as Colt teamed with Sauer for both the Colt Suaer bolt actions and the Colt Suaer drillings, so here has the great Italian maker, Renato Gamba, elected to use a J.P. Sauer and Sohn barreled action (the same action as the Colt drilling). It’s in .375 H&H belted (not the .375 flanged) O/U Double Rifle, with scope, engraved by the great Italian Master Engraver R. Vascoinc and so signed.
(R.Vascoinc is the famous FAMARS engraver for their Gran Lusso.)
This action is from the pinnacle of old-world gunmaking, using the time-tested and proven Blitz ejector action as used by the most famous German and Austrian gunmakers for more than a century. All the renowned Suhl makers (J.P. Sauer, Franz Kettner, Schmidt & Habermann, Greifelt, Kessler,…) and Austrian makers (Borovnik, Hambrusch, Hauptmann, Fanzoj, Just,..) have built heirloom rifles on this action for their fine multiple barrel guns: from double rifles to drillings and veirlings and is still used today, by those makers who have survived.
Built on the best Purdey double underbite system (one bifurcated) with the massive Kersten double top lock (as used only on the best over and under doubles), with double triggers (front articulated), non-ejector extractors, manual tang safety, overhead sears, intercepting safety sears, and cocking indicators; it features 25” J.P.Sauer and Sohl Krupp shoe lump barrels, full length solid hand-filed rib housing the one-standing-leaf rear sight, a front bead (as preferred by Elmer Keith), and Talley quick-detachable scope mounts, fitted with a high-end Zeiss Diavari C 3-9x36 scope with traditional duplex reticle -- and Butler Creek flip-up scope covers, a perfect scope choice for this gun.
Finished meticulously by the renowned Italian maker, Renato Gamba from the great Gardone val Trompe craftsmanship, the action is fully engraved (100%) with well-executed deep relief game scenes surrounded by duteous scrolls. On the left side are two African elephants, male and female; and on the right side, are an African lion and lioness. The operating lever, top tang, trigger guard, lower tang and Anson & Deeley forearm release and escutcheon are also fully engraved and inletted at points. The receiver and forearm iron are coin finished with long lower tang inletted to a point, while the Anson & Deeley release, operating lever, safety, Blitz trigger plate, trigger guard and bottom tang are polished blue, creating a very handsome combination of contrasting metal colors. All screws are indexed.
The action is one of the strongest for over and under double rifles and not often used today because of the hand work required. (As a testimony, recently the great Austrian maker, Joseph Just used this action to build a .475 H&H Magnum rifle with extra barrels for .375 and .300 H&H – check with Vintage Doubles). Two through bolts for added stock strength are set in the side panels.
The stock and forearm are dark English walnut, both made from one piece of wood for grain and color match. The contours of the grain show nice figure in the cheek piece and are correctly aligned and perfectly patterned for strength, needed for the recoil of this caliber. The stock configuration has a pistol grip with rosewood grip cap, a European comb, a very well-proportioned and shapely shadow-line cheek piece; and the forearm has an excellently shaped but conservative rounded tip that flows beautifully back into the steel stacked barrels. The wood finish gives it away that it is Italian, not German, with beautiful French polish having a semi-gloss effect from the many coats. Checkering is hand-checkered 26 lpi, generously wrapped around forearm and coming together at the top of grip, generous in traditional patterns on the pistol grip and the side panels, with no runovers. Wood-to-metal fit and inletting could not be better. The LOP to dark leather covered recoil pad is 14.” Weight is 8 lb. 5 oz without scope. Furniture includes Factory sling swivel eyes and a vacant monogram shield. This is truly a Best gun.
This rifle was built in 1972 during a period before the technology of computer-aided design and the modern technology of CNC and spark erosion systems.
To Americans, Renato Gamba is probably best recognized for their $20,000 “Grand Slam Bobby Jones or Arnold Palmer” commemoratives engraved by the master Botega C. Giorvanelli, OR their 2007 Championship winning “Daytonna” over/under shotgun with its world’s fastest removable trigger group.
There are few gunmaking pantheons in the world: London, England; Etienne, France; Gardone val Trompia, Italy; Ferlach, Austria; Suhl, Germany; Leige, Belgium; and Eibar, Spain. From Gardone val Trompia, Renato Gamba is among a highly respected list of great gunmakers: Fabbri, FAMARS, Piotti, Bertuzzi, Perugini & Visini, Bosis, etc. and the big one down the street (Beretta) whose SO9 is made by FAMARs. Renato Gamba has gunmaking roots going back to 1748, but Renato began his own independent business in 1967.
This action is marked “J.P.Sauer & Sohn” and “MADE IN GERMANY” while the rib is marked “SAFARI 72 ARMI RENATO GAMBA GARDONE VT ITALY” KRUPP-SPECIAL LAUFSTAHL” in German, while the rifle is inscribed “By RANATO GAMBA” and “MADE IN ITALY.”
This rifle is in Excellent Plus Plus condition, the action is tight on face, bore is mint, bluing and wood finish are 99%.
Replacement cost of this gun today would be $17,500.
