Description:
#707, 17.8 x 28mm RF Danish, 27 5/8” barrel with an excellent, bright bore. The barrel is an overall silvery gunmetal gray with sparsely scattered light oxidation staining and some light pitting, the frame shows some trace remnants of dark gray-brown. Interesting and well-made arms, these started off as Model 1848 Bagladeriffel, pillar breech rifles bought in Liege (this example by Pirlot Freres), and were used in the Three Years War (1848-1851) by the rebels of Schleswig-Holsteins. Post-hostilities, they were converted at Kronborg in 1853-5 and issued to the Danish Navy as the Model 1853. Beginning in 1866 through 1868 they were finally converted to the Snider system at the Copenhagen Armory, designated the Model 1853/66. The pivoting breechblock has a bright gunmetal case-hardened patina while the lockplate is a duller pewter gray with some very light specks of pinprick pitting. Similarly, the hammer has a matching patina with perhaps a bit more pitting evident. The lockplate is maker marked “Pirlot Freres a Liege” and all of the brass hardware now has a dull, yellow-ochre patina. The left barrel flat is numbered “707”, as is the underside of the breech block, trigger guard, sideplate, and buttplate. The correct cleaning rod is present and numbered “560”. The stock rates good-very good with overall dings and handling marks scattered throughout as well as a number of light-moderate bruises. There is some light chipping around the barrel retaining wedges on the right side of the stock. There are markings on the left stock flat which are no longer legible, however the rectangular “BGC” cartouche to the rear of the trigger guard remains fairly crisp. The lock is crisp and mechanically functional, and the original sliding brass rear sight is still installed. This is a very nice example of a rare and well-made Danish Snider conversion. Antique
