This fourth model 1866 carbine has a very light serial number stamp which is common on rifles in this range, with the 1 and last 0 only partially visible. 155030 will letter as a Carbine shipped in October 28, 1881. Left side of lower tang and toe of butplate show matching assembly numbers "8045". The upper tang cutout shows three illegible numbers followed by a "5". This carbine shows features correct for this serial range such as screw held mag tube cap, 1 turn in 36 inch six groove rifling, chamber not recessed for rim of cartridge, correct rear sight and barrel mounted front sight. The lever is the earlier style thin opening design. Frame has developed a great two tone mottled patina. Screw slots show some damage and receiver has a few impact marks and scratches around screws. The extractor is worn and may not function well. Barrel markings are light but legible with second style King's Improvement and patents. Barrel and mag tube have developed a dark patina with wear and barrel has several dings on left side by rear sight. Forend shows saddle wear on bottom, typical crack at bottom of tip, and a couple chips along barrel. It has slightly shrunk and now shows a narrow gap at receiver joint. A sliver is missing on both sides of upper tang and heel has a repaired chip on right side. A sling swivel base hole has been filled in at toe line of butt. A very nice example of a frontier used 1866 carbine that has seen quite a bit of saddle use and is in average ++ condition Antique.
