Description:
This is a Marlin 39 Take-down Lever Action with octagonal barrel, and ''shoots .22 cal Short-Long-Long Rifle rimfire cartridges without change or adjustment". The top tang is drilled and tapped for tang sights but does not appear to have been mounted. The magazine tube lock is the button type.Particular to this rifle is the top tang stamped with a Six-Pointed Star, " the final inspector's mark to certify that the gun was as near perfection as the finest of materials, equipment and skill can make it ", according to the Marlin catalog of the time. Note also the "S" prefix to the serial number, indicating that this rifle was not to be used with high-speed cartridges; more importantly for today's collector, this prefix indicates a pre-1932 manufacture, when the improved bolt came out to handle the high-speed rimfires. Condition: Metal is very good, with a few expected nicks along the barrel; the magazine tube shows no dents or bend; the lower tang, receiver and lever show traces of case colors; rifle has developed a very nice even patina; Wood is straight-grained with expected use marks; area of deeper gouges is seen on the left stock above the pistol grip; there is a very fine hairline crack in the bottom of the stock where a white-line spacer plug fills a sling stud screw hole; the rear and forestock remain tight to the action; stock has been refinished.
