Description:
original US Ames M1841 Naval Cutlass. This sword used during the Pre Civil War & Civil War era remains in un-touched condition as found. There were 6600 of these cutlass's manufactured by the N.P. Ames company between 1842-1846 and this sword appears to be dated 1845. The Ames company marking are faint to illegible but there. The heavy brass handle and guard remain in fair plus to good condition, the guard at the finial is stamped with the letters J.L. in a circle and the other side with the leters RC, the guard is stamped 151. The blade has not been cleaned nor tampered with but shows mild to heavier pitting toward the guard where the name is stamped. This type cutlass saw service before the Civil War and was also used heavily during the Civil War. Surviving specimens are getting hard to find. The overall condition as described is fair - fair plus plus. Inv.: # US 2924
