Description:
Civil War Colt Model 1851 Navy Revolver - 4th Model - US Martial Navy - with scarce iron frame - Cal. .36 - 7 1/2" Bbl. - SN 91XXX(1859).- all matching numbers, including wedge - Bore is VG+ or better - bright with sharp rifling but shows some moderate roughness and light pitting in spots. Action is excellent, smooth and crisp with perfect timing and lock-up. Metal is excellent with no rust, pits, or corrosion - excellent nipples and screws - sharp markings and crisp edges - cylinder has a sharp and mostly crisp scene. Barrel and cylinder retain about 60% to 65% thinning blue and barrel is drifting to a "plum" brown beneath the blue - the frame and loading lever have about 50% darkening case collor - iron guard and backstrap have 65% to 70% thinning blue remaining. The front sight is the brass blade type in a dovetail and is proper period for the revolver and could very well be factory. Walnut grips are excellent and undamaged with perfect fit but appear to be replacements - retain 95% finish. This a a very scarce and desirable late Hartford "Navy" Navy that is in the serial range of the 2000 or so revolvers ordered direct from Colt by the US Navy rather than ordered through the Bureau of Ordnance and are identified by only the small "US" stamp on the frame, the iron guard and backstrap, and the absence of inspector marks and cartouches. A exceptionally sharp and very scarce US Martial Navy in Fine condition and except for grips and possibly the front sight, all original. A super addition for an early Colt or Civil War collection.
