Description:
This custom '03 Sprigfield was built by Frederick Surkamer of Chicago in the Early 1930's for a local businessman. The rifle was recently acquired from the family of the original owner. It was purchased with the intent of being taken to Africa, which it was and used to take at least one elephant and one lion, among other animals. Frederick Surkamer was a noted Chicago gunsmith born in Illinois in 1871 who was a contemporary of Fred Adolph and R.G.Owen. He built custom rifles on Springfield and Mauser actions. He did work for the great sporting firms Von Lengerke & Antoine and Marshall Fields in Chicago. The original manufacture date of the action is 1921, the custom work was performed in approximately 1932, Surkamer died in 1936 so this is likely one of his last guns. The rifle is in the 1.2 million serial number range. It is stocked in nicely figured walnut, the stock is in very good condition considering it's age and field use. The barrel is the original military barrel which has been recontoured, it is bright and shiney and shoots very well. The rifle is fitted with a Lyman 48S receiver sight with folding peep. The sight is fully intact and functional though the sight hood is very slightly bent. This does not effect sight function. The front sight is made by King. The spare parts within the butt are all present.
This rifle is in very good overall condition, approximately 90%. It has not been altered in any way since being built in the early '30s. Make me an offer!
