Description:
Swivel breech rifles, were originally known as a Wender (winder?) rifles. This swivel breech percussion drilling features a .50 caliber rifled barrel, .62 caliber rifled barrel, and 12 gauge smoothbore barrel with a screw-in choke. This drilling, three barreled gun, is stocked in black walnut, and trimmed in browned iron furniture with a L&R back action lock. Multiple barrel percussion rifles and shotguns were a popular design in mid ninetieth century America with many antique examples surviving today. This rifle & shotgun combination was assembled and signed by contemporary builder Dr. Gary White.

This drilling features two Colerain rifled barrels and a Remington smoothbore barrel. The Colerain .50 caliber barrel is cut rifled with a 1 in 56" twist, the .62 caliber barrel is cut rifled with a 1 in 66" twist, both cut with six round bottom grooves. Called “radius groove rifling", Colerain eliminates the sharp inside corner that accumulates fouling. Mr. White reports good success with both barrels test firing them at 25 and 50 yards. The Remington smoothbore barrel has a screw in cylinder bore choke installed. The barrel accepts White's Super Turkey chokes.
The walnut buttstock has been stained dark. The stock is fitted with a tall, nearly flat, checkered steel buttplate to spread the felt recoil over a large area. A antique 19th century cap box is inlet just ahead of the buttplate. The triggerguard is shaped with a wide open bow and curled grip rail in mid-19th century fashion. All of the iron furniture is finished to a dark matte brown to match the lock and barrels.

Trigger reach is 14-1/2" to fit a larger or taller shooter. Weight is 11.3 pounds.
The butt plate heel tapers to a point just over the heel of the stock. A oval cheek piece is shaped for a right hand shooter. The tang extends down the wrist, to help strengthen this most fragile part of the rifle.

The three barrels are engraved G. B. White / Roosevelt / Utah Territory. The rifled barrels are fitted with flat top rear sights dovetailed 6-1/2" ahead of the breech. All three barrels have a tall brass blade front sight soldered behind the muzzle.
The rounded toe of the rifle fades into the bottom of the lock panel. The trigger has a long triggerplate, which in combination with tang sandwiches the wrist between two steel plates. The trigger bar is double bolted into the face plates that rotates against the barrels, it is very sturdy.
This rifle is fitted with a L&R back action percussion lock. Called “back action" because the mainspring hangs behind the tumbler, this lock was popular on percussion guns made from the east coast to St. Louis in the mid 1800's. The lock is finished to a matte brown.

The barrel locking latch is positioned at the front of the triggerguard. When the lock is in the half cock position a short pull rearward will release the latch and allow the barrels to be rotated by hand. The latch will automatically catch the next latch rotated into the top position. The side panel is fitted with a nickel silver sideplate mounted with steel screws. The long fancy sideplate design has a mid 19th century Eastern U.S. influence. The oval cheek piece is gives a right hand shooter a comfortable place to align the sights.
Shown from the muzzle end. The .50 caliber rifled Colerain barrel, lower right .62 caliber Colerain barrel, lower left 12 gauge Remington barrel with screw-in cylinder bore choke installed. Three ramrods, one to serve each barrel are fitted to this drilling, each secured with a capture lug.
