Description:
Rare Volcanic large frame pistol w/ 6" barrel. Estimates are that fewer than 300 of the Volcanic large frames were made with a 6" barrel. The Volcanic company was short lived, having been established by Horace Smith & Daniel Wesson with their business partner in 1854. Subsequently, Oliver Winchester acquired the assets in 1857 and moved the company to New Haven, CT as the New Haven Arms Company. B. Tyler Henry was hired as superentendant and before too long, the Henry rifle was the result of the Volcanic progression.
The brass receiver retains 30-40% of the original silver wash. The barrel & magazine tube retain 70-75% original blue. The grips show sharp edge wear w/ a few minor nicks while retaining most of their original factory varnish. Seeminly unique to this gun is a small, ~1/8" hole in the left front rib about a 1/4" from the muzzle. Perhaps this was to oil the barrel loading sleeve?
Mechanics are fine; the bore w/ good shine w/ minimal pitting. Barrel address is crisp. A really nice piece from the Volcanic/Henry/Winchester era!
