As most Purdey side-by-side shotguns built since 1880, this gun features Frederick Beesley’s famous self-opening (or “self-operating”) action. This gun was originally built with 3 inch chambers, which was unusual for a gun built in the twenties. Unlike many guns that are built with 2 ½ inch or 2 ¾ inch chambers, only to later be “pushed out” to 3 inches, this gun was originally built as a 3 inch chambered, heavy frame gun as evidenced by the single 3 inch proof marks on the barrel flats (this gun has not been modified or reproofed as a result of being modified). As is the case with most Purdeys of this era, the gun sports Wem patent ejectors, but unlike most Purdey guns, it has Purdey’s interpretation of the Greener patent single inertia trigger (combined with Purdey’s 1911 single trigger patent). As with most all of Purdey’s Heavy Field Gun, this gun has 30 inch barrels, side clips, and Purdey’s patent third fastener (or “third bite”). The poof marks indicate choke boring, with actual choke constrictions measuring at .009 inch for the right barrel, and .021 for the left barrel. Barrel wall thickness measures .030 inch six inches back from the muzzles for both barrels. Other details about this gun: Purdey house-style “rose and scroll” engraving, most likely by engraver Walter Warren; bushed strikers, and prince of whales grip buttstock. The perfect gun for someone who wants a slightly heavier (and much more robust) side-by-side shotgun for high volume dove shooting in Argentina, or would like to shoot heavier loads without causing any abuse to the gun, or would like to mitigate recoil while shooting standard loads. One of the last guns Purdey produced prior to scaling back production in response to the stock market crash of 1929 and the resulting global recession/depression. A magnificent gun that represents an end to an era.
