Description:
Bucks County Longrifle,
.50 caliber 44" Getz swamped octagon barrel
Ketland flint lock, curly maple, brass with side opening patchbox, by the noted Fred Bowen
This Bucks County longrifle is in the style of a rifle carried by Nicholas Allen of Virginia when he served with Colonel Daniel Morgan in Morgan's rifle company during the American Revolution. The rifle is stocked in dark stained curly maple and trimmed in brass furniture with a side opening patchbox. The imported Ketland flint lock is mated to a .50 caliber Getz swamped barrel. Neatly fitted and finished this rifle was created by contemporary gun maker Fred Bowen, later known for his skillful engraving.

The .50 caliber 44" swamped octagon barrel gives this rifle a modest weight without being overly muzzle heavy. The swamped barrel is thickest at the breech for strength, tapers to a narrow waist, flares at the muzzle to align the sights. Cut rifled by Getz Barrel Company, with seven radius groove rifling, and a coned muzzle to ease loading without the use of a short starter. The barrel is fitted with a flat top rear sight 8" from the breech. A brass barley corn blade front sight is dovetailed 3" from the muzzle.

Trigger reach is 13", which is very typical of a antique longrifle. The rifle weighs 9.3 pounds.
The curly maple stock is stained with aquafortis to accent the tight bands of figure over the length of the stock. The stock is finished with a hand rubbed oil finish. The buttstock is fitted with a wide early Lehigh Valley style buttplate, flat and comfortable, ideal for this .50 caliber rifle. The wide flat buttplate spreads the recoil of this .50 caliber longrifle over a larger area.

Recoil should be modest with a .490 pure lead round ball, in a .018" ticking patch, lubed with Mink Oil (use real animal fat, not a petroleum or vegetable grease), cut your patch at the muzzle after seating with a short starter, over 75 grains of GOEX FFg black powder. Prime with two or three grains of GOEX FFFFg priming powder, never more than about one-third pan full.

The side opening patchbox is common to the Bucks County school, but not limited to it. The patchbox door has a hidden release beneath the head of the toeplate. Once the latch has been released the door springs open under the pressure of the door spring. Beneath the door is a deep cut cavity for storing flints patches or other related accessories.
This top view reveals the wide buttplate, and raised cheek piece for a right hand shooter. As the rifle has aged the stock has shrunk slightly, this is visible along the buttplate edges and on the patchbox door. The buttplate is not perfectly centered behind the tang. Rather, it is offset from the right hand shooter's cheek. This feature is called cast-off, and it places the right hand shooter's eye directly behind the line of sight, making this gun instinctive to point and shoot for a right hand shooter.

The slender wrist flares into the lock panels. The lock panels taper widest at the rear, a correct detail for early longrifles. The barrel is fitted with a flared tang. The barrel is finished with a smooth brown.
A short Bucks County style toeplate is fitted to protect the toe of the rifle. The toeplate also conceals the patchbox release button. Depress the ball end head of the toeplate to release the patchbox door. The burnished brass triggerguard is mounted with pins rather than screws.

The 3/8" diameter ramrod is fitted with a steel tip with 8-32 threads for loading and cleaning accessories.
Ignition for this .50 caliber longrifle is provided by a large Ketland flint lock imported by Dixie Gun Works. This early style trade lock has been modified with a square tail in the fashion of the lock used on the antique rifle it is modeled. Use our 7/8" Tom Fuller hand knapped gun flints, #FLINT-ENG-7 for best performance in this lock. The single trigger is shaped with a curled tip in Bucks County fashion. The trigger is pinned high to provide good leverage against the sear of the lock.

A direct drilled vent hole is positioned well above the bottom of the pan, centered on the heat of the flash. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash.
The elaborate brass sideplate supports two lock bolts. The lock panels are neatly shaped to give this rifle a slender profile. Notice the graceful transition from butt to wrist, to breech. The square cheek is shaped for a right hand shooter. The dark stained curly maple has narrow bands of attractive figure best viewed in bright daylight.

This Bucks County longrifle is offered in very lightly used condition.
