Description:
This half stock plains rifle has a mid 19th century appearance with the buttplate and triggerguard patterned after rifles by H.E. Leman. Henry Eicholtz Leman built his original Indian Trade Rifles, circa 1840 to 1880, in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He also spelled his name "Lehman" early in his career. This half stock rifle is stocked in maple, with brass furniture. The 31" straight octagon Green Mountain barrel and L&R English style percussion lock are finished to a smooth dark brown. The barrel is marked Hunter's Trail TSW

The Green Mountain cut rifled barrel measures a full 31" by 1" octagon. Rifled with eight lands and grooves with a 1 in 48" twist for patched round ball. Green Mountain barrels are machined from high quality American made bar stock, A.I.S.I. 1137 modified, stress relieved, annealed, certified rifle barrel quality steel. All barrels are drilled from solid stock, reamed to a high degree of smoothness, then optically checked for straightness. Very close tolerances are maintained. We recommend our .440" pure lead round ball, patched with .017" Ox-Yoke ticking, lubricated with our Mink Oil patch grease, or other animal fat lubricant, if you require best accuracy.
Henry Leman often striped his stocks artificially, painting the stripes with ink. This nice curly maple rifle stock is naturally figured, with randomly spaced stripes. Stained to a light brown, the stock is oil finished to a satin sheen.

The rifle weighs 9.2 pounds, and the trigger reach is 12-1/2". This rifle will be a perfect companion for a strong and fit shooter about 5'6" to 5'10" height. .
When viewed from the top, the lock panels are trim, and the wrist flows back to the tapered comb. A single lock bolt retains the percussion lock by L&R. The single lock bolt, fitted to a teardrop escutcheon, is a correct feature on most Leman percussion rifles.
The stock has a brass toeplate fitted with brass screws. Brass screws are not traditionally found on antique rifles. The polished brass triggerguard is mounted with pins. The forend is fitted with a poured pewter forend cap that also acts as the ramrod entry pipe. The 3/8" diameter ramrod is fitted with 10-32 threads for loading and cleaning accessories.
Fitted with a L&R's percussion lock with a English style hammer, this lock is finished chocolate brown to match the barrel. Inletting is quite good, far superior to the original antique H. E. Leman Indian Trade Rifle in a local collection. You may desire to add a brass flash cup, to protect the area around the nipple from the effects of repeated cap flash.

The single trigger is pinned high, to provide maximum leverage, and minimum trigger release pressure. Good internal geometry gives this rifle a very smooth trigger release.
The cheek view shows the brass tear drop escutcheon surrounding the lock bolt. The sideplate inlay is inlet flush with the wood, and counter bored to accept the lock bolt's head. The buttstock is shaped with a oval cheek piece for a right hand shooter.

This nice used .45 caliber H. E. Leman rifle is said to be unfired. If you seek an 1840 - 1850 era plains rifle, consider this nice hand made rifle.
