Description:
Signed by contemporary builder Chris Hirsch, this well made Kentucky pistol is stocked in dark stained curly maple and trimmed in brass furniture. The brass furniture has a mellow aged patina and is neatly hand engraved on the triggerguard and buttcap. The well tuned small Siler flintlock and 10" octagon-to-round barrel are finished to a smooth dark brown. Used, the pistol has some handling marks, marks on the frizzen face, and a bright spot on the breech where the frizzen just touches the side flat.

The .50 caliber barrel has a 3-1/2" octagon breech with a single wedding band to round. The .50 caliber bore is rifled with seven lands and grooves, and the muzzle has been very slightly coned to ease loading a tightly patched round ball. The bore is bright and appears well maintained. The finish on the barrel shows some wear from the frizzen, and at the muzzle from firing with patches cut at the muzzle.

The small Siler flintlock has a crisp action and a well hardened frizzen. When using our best 5/8" knapped English gun flints, #FLINT-ENG-5, the lock will throw a shower of sparks into the pan. A Ampco vent liner is well centered and positioned at the top edge of the pan to provide best ignition. The trigger is pinned high to provide good leverage against the sear.
The bag shaped grip gently tapers and flares into the lock panels. The brass buttcap extends up the rear of the grip. Silver wire inlay scrolls extend from the tip of the buttcap and end just below the thumbpiece. The wire inlay work is well done with smooth curves. The oval thumbpiece is hand engraved with a two man-in-the moon images facing each other.

A panel of raised carving surrounds the flared thumbnail tang of the breechplug. The tang of the breech has a short raised rear sight. The sight position on the tang maximizes the available sight radius. A small brass blade front sight is soldered behind the muzzle. The top flat at the breech end of the barrel is signed C. Hirsch.
The bottom of the bag shaped buttcap is hand engraved with a star burst design centered around the mounting screw. The triggerguard bow is hand engraved and shaped with a acorn finial, a English influence. The forend has a raised molding along the edge of the ramrod channel. The well fitted ramrod has a brass end cap and a reversible worm on the opposite end.
The well shaped side panel gives this pistol a slender appearance through the lock panels. The brass sideplate is shaped with a pointed arrow finial and secured with polished and fire blued lock bolts. The bag shaped grip flares slightly at the bottom to provide a comfortable grip for the shooter's hand.
