Description:
This uncommon variation of the King's Musket is was considered ideal for use by ship boarding parties. Similar to the Brown Bess Sea Service Musket, made exclusively for use aboard His Majesty's Ships. It is shorter and sturdier than the infantry musket. Locked in the ship's armory rack, except during use, these were issued to boarding parties.

Issued with an armory bright finish, this smoothbore has a antique finish applied to both the brass and steel. The stout gun has a 14" patina finished brass 14 gauge, .69 caliber, barrel with 1-7/8" trumpet shaped muzzle. The furniture is antiqued polished brass, and the stock is walnut selected for grain strength through the wrist.

This blunderbuss is in excellent condition. It will be an ideal arm for a 1750 - 1780 period reenactor whose interest is French & Indian War or Revolutionary War period events.
Stocked in walnut, nicely finished, this Sea Service Blunderbuss is correctly trimmed in brass furniture. Notice the heavy brass buttplate, formed from flat stock, attached with two steel screws. It strongly resembles the N. W. Trade Gun buttplates of the period, except that the Sea Service buttplate is more massive. The flat shape was not only easy to manufacture it also stands flat when placed in a ships armory rack.

The brass Blunderbuss barrel is 14", smooth bored and polished bright inside. A sturdy wooden 3/8" diameter ramrod with tulip tip serves the barrel. To prevent loss the ramrod threads into place the last few turns.

A sling swivel button is fitted to the buttstock, a wide forward swivel rests against the single ribbed ramrod pipe.
The top view shows the breech of this Sea Service Blunderbuss. The barrel has no rear sight, so this big smoothbore musket also qualifies for use in the NMLRA's new N. W. Trade Gun match, where round balls are fired at paper targets, and shot is fired at clay birds thrown from a trap. Unlike infantry muskets, no brass thumbpiece is used to decorate the wrist.
This bottom view shows the wide butt with rounded toe, and simplified British Sea Service triggerguard with ball end finial. Notice that the grain of the walnut stock runs smoothly through the beefy tapered round wrist, for best strength. Boarding enemy ships required a shorter, lighter, but very sturdy musket for rugged service. This musket was the best design of the period for such short range fighting. This is an appropriate musket for any early period reenactor.
Sometimes called a “Queen Anne" lock, this best quality round faced flint lock actually dates from the 1730 to 1770 era, well after Anne's reign ended. These early London style fowler locks are found on colonial American longrifles and fowling guns. The tall cock sweeps a wide arc of sparks, making these larger locks among the best sparking locks we've ever offered. The pan has a bridle arm to support the frizzen pivot screw, not always found on early English locks. The plate has an integral pan, and the frizzen is tightly fitted.
Notice the simple flat British sideplate. First Model Brown long land pattern infantry muskets were fitted with convex sideplates, with two screws. Second model muskets have a flat sideplate, with two screws. This early Sea Service Blunderbuss is from the First Model Brown Bess period, but was made with a flat brass sideplate.

The tail of the lock has a crown over H. The quarter flat of the breech has attractive British proof marks, two crowns with crossed scepters, and a crown over CP.
