Description:
NSN, .48 Caliber (approx. 40 Bore), 23 3/4" octagonal barrel with a good, lightly pitted bore. This is an attractive little back action rifle that has an overall mottled gray patina along the barrel, darkest at the breech, with a darker plum-brown patina on the lock and hammer (which also have some pinrick pitting in spots and some shallow cleaning marks as well). The breech section has light floral scrollwork which repeats on the lock and hammer and there is scallop shell and geometric pattern engraving on the top tang. The sear has a worn full-cock notch and does not lock in place and a newer rear sight notch has been added to the rear dovetail. The half-length maple stock has been lightly sanded with an added oil finish over scattered light handling marks and blemishes and is fastened by a single wedge with plain oval escutcheons. There is an ornate, lightly freckled triggerguard with urn-shaped finial and lightly pitted floral scroll along the exterior of the bow. The checkering is still strong and the buttstock has numerous small handling marks and blemishes including a previous owner's name stamped into the wood on either side of the butt: "A.KING". The lightly freckled buttplate stands a bit proud of the wood, especially along the top tang. The gun comes with a replaced steel ramrod held by two plain thimbles and a lightly decorated tail-pipe. A vacant sling swivel eyelet is present on the buttstock. This is a handsome little gun in good condition. Antique
