This musket has been reconverted from percussion and has an 1825 dated, Springfield Manufacturing Co.-made barrel (marked “S.M.Co.” on the left breech flat below the Springfield proofmarks). The Harpers Ferry-made lock is dated 1832 while the trigger guard has the matching Springfield “102” serial number. There is light-moderate pitting throughout the darkly mottled, pewter gray metal, with even pinprick pitting that gets heaviest along the sides of the barrel where it meets the stock, and some mild oxidation on the forward surface of the frizzen. The walnut stock has a dark brown, added varnish finish with period carved identifying or unit markings on both sides of the buttstock (“H”), as well as scattered handling marks and blemishes. Additionally, there is a further lazy “E” marking on the right side of the stock just behind the sideplate that is repeated in the metal at the top of the barrel breech. The wood surrounding the lock has several small cracks and partial chips as well. A slightly too short, correct metal ramrod is included and the mechanism is tight and functional. This is a very nice looking example of a reconverted musket with an appealing antique look, and would make a great addition to any collection. {Ref.
