Description:
This is a rare 1860 Spencer Carbine one of 11,000 carbines that was converted after the Civil War by Springfield Armory to fire the 56-52 or 56-50 cartridge instead of the original 56-56 cartridge which was 52 caliber. These Model 1860 Spencer carbines were widely used during the Civil War, and also saw substantial duty during the Indian Wars. It has the original Civil War issued low serial number in the 11,000 range on the rear of the breach and underside of the barrel. It's 22" barrel was sleeved for the smaller 50 caliber cartridge with three groove rifling. A small swivel device known as the “Stabler cut-off “was added forward of the trigger (see photos) to allow for use as a single shot (it keeps the breech from opening completely). This modified carbine is one that was converted and has an oval cartouche with the inspector’s marking ECW - E.C. Wheeler, on the left side of the stock near the saddle bar. There are still slight traces remaining of the Spencer address and the 1860 pat'd.date on top of the frame. This carbine is in very good shape for being over 150 years old. The wood has a nice finish with no major cracks or repairs. The metal has turned a dark patina, very little pitting. The action is strong both in half and full cock. Bore has nice rifling. Rear sight complete and the numbers are clear. Magazine tube functions nicely and is in great shape.These are hard to find Spencer conversions and a great Historical collectible.
