Description:
SOLD...Antique 1892 Winchester 38-40. 26" octagon barrel. Here is a nice antique 1892 Winchester. Has a special order 26" octagon barrel. Caliber is the great shooting 38-40. Very accurate. S/N 102065 and made in 1895. This S/N is very close to the other 92 I have listed as it has 102629 S/N.. The bore is very good. Shows strong rifling all the way through. Does have some light roughness from black powder but NO big pits or cratters and NO rings or bulges. Very shootable bore on this one.. The mechanics are excellent. It feeds, fires and ejects perfectly. No bulged cases or backed out primers. Both safety and full cock notches on the hammer are perfect and positive. The metal over all is mostly a medium plumb brown patina with traces of blue on the barrel and mag tube in the protected area between the two. The metal is all smooth with no pitting anywhere. Looks like something was wiped on the barrel by the caliber marking that removed the plumb patina. Whoops!!!! Nothing has been done to the metal in that area. No filing or abrasives but just looks like it was wiped with something. Who knows. This could easily be touched up with some coloring if so desired. It would make it look a little better. I will do this if a customer wants it done. I will leave that up to you. I can't say it will look perfect but would look a bit better.. All the markings are excellent. Both front and rear sights are later replacements but has a great sight picture when shooting. All the screw heads are sharp and not all burred up from tinkering. The forearm wood has a couple slivers out on each side behind the end cap.{see photos}. These are fairly easy to repair if you are good with some kind of filler or putty. I will just leave them alone. The butt stock is excellent with no splits, cracks or repairs. Has some very light dings and mars from honest use but no abuse. Has great color and not oil soaked. Fits tight to all the metal but for a little wear at the toe of the butt plate as is very common on these ole rifles but never sanded on or messed with. These antique 92's are getting harder to find and the prices are going up evry time I buy one. Here is a nice one with the special order 26" barrel that would be a great shooter or collector. You don not find the 92's very often with over length barrels as much as you do the 73's for some reason. I have this in mind on the pricing but also considering the slivers in the forearrm and the replaced sights. I want to price it to sell and of course if it did not have these issues, it would absolutey be priced a bit higher. It is what it is !!!!! $50 insured shipping. Call 765-728-8049 with any questions or more photos. Don't let this one get away !!! Please check out my other antique firearms while you are here as I may have something else of interest to you. Check back often. Thank you for looking as always.
