Description:
This is a private purchase size 7 3/8 bonnet with William Scully Ltd., Montreal maker's label on the interior. The quilted satin lining is in fine condition and intact with virtually no wear and has a large Canadian Essex Scottish badge on a swatch of regimental tartan (Clan Gregor). The toorie (pom-pom) on the top is still attached, but has been slightly flattened over time. The Essex Scottish Regiment, founded in 1885, was among the first Canadian units to see combat in Europe during World War II when it took part in the ill-fated Dieppe Raid, and ended the war having suffered 2,500 casualties (550 war dead). This was the highest casualty figure suffered by any Canadian unit during the war. Following the war the Essex Scottish was amalgamated with the Kent Regiment to form the Essex and Kent Scottish Regiment. This is a great piece of Canadian military history and would make a great addition to any collection.
