Description:
NSN, .460 caliber, 4 1/2” barrel cluster with very good bores that have some light freckling along their length. This is a large pistol that retains original vibrant color case-hardening on the barrel cluster that blends smoothly with a mild freckled gray patina along the balance. There are English scrollwork accents at the muzzles with deeply struck London proofs near the breeches. The frame and nipple shield have extensive English scroll engraving with “TIPPING & LAWDEN/HOLBORN/LONDON” (the company only operated at the Holborn address for one year; 1843). The right side of the frame and a large sash hook on the left that still retains much of the original bright blue finish and has vivid color case-hardening beneath. The walnut grip has extremely fine checkering with some very minor wear and flattening of some of the points. The trigger and sliding hammer safety retain traces of their original nitre blue finish with gray metal on the balance and the engraved metal grip cap has visible color case-hardening and a vacant compartment with hinged metal door. Tipping & Lawden were Birmingham-based makers who had the British license to manufacture and sell Sharps pepperbox pistols as well. Examples of their bar hammer big bore pepperboxes are very rare. Pistols of this type were popular with well-to-do ship captains and mounted officers who found the sash hook very convenient and an aid to carry. They are considered naval boarding pistols by John Nigel George in his book, "British Pistols & Revolvers". This is a fantastic pistol that is both in a very desirable size and configuration and has an unusually high amount of the original finish remaining too. The pics really don't do it justice. (The last picture is to show the size difference between the Dragoon and a normal size pepperbox.) Antique
