Description:
#4952 Colt S/A, 5-1/2”x45COLT, “U.S.” Artillery model with belt, holster, and McKeever ammo pouch. Mixed serial numbers, as is correct, these being dismantled Cavalry revolvers that were later altered in the late 1890s to the 5-1/2” length, then re-assembled with no regard to matching part and refurbished to be quick replacements for the ineffective 38COLT D/A models. The frame number is in the 4XXX range (1874) and thus being originally a pre-Custer range O.W. Ainsworth inspected Cavalry The triggerguard is earlier yet (2xxx range and thus also Ainsworth inspected) remaining numbers all mixed with only the backstrap being in the early 1880s and being a Clark inspected piece. VG+ bore, about a 7 on a scale of 10 and fine tight smooth action with a crisp lock-up, and having the safety notch and “fall-back” notch on the hammer. Half cock and full cock are fine and hammer is the correct vintage for this period of Colt. The exterior is excellent smooth metal overall, most of which has 70-75% coverage of the original arsenal blue refinish with a 70% density and the metal being very fine with no pitting. The casehardened frame and hammer have faded out to swirly greys, no actual color remaining. Address and patent markings are VG, and it has Oklahoma 4th Cav markings on the frame which look totally correct (at least, to me) and may make this worth some investigation, as it most likely was originally a Cavalry in that region. The one-piece walnut grips have no cartouche; only the inspectors stamp on the bottom (R.A.C.) and are in fine condition and do fit excellent, bulls-eye ejector rod head. The barrel is “C” inspected, which is Casey) and as mentioned, this is proper for these Artillery reworks . Suffice to say this (…and this is a VERY important fact)…that since many, if not most pre-1900 Single Actions have been restored, enhanced, and/or “juiced-up” to some degree, especially these military marked ones, one should always take that into consideration. This gun, however, looks totally correct to me. As for the belt, holster, and McKeever pouch, they are all in better-than-average condition and came with this Fine conditioned Artillery when I got it. BUT …if someone wants ONLY the revolver, I will split the set; I will NOT sell the holster rig without the revolver. A fine, FINE Artillery. $7750
