#3857, Boss & Co., 73 St. James's Street, London: A Boss 12 Bore SxS Sidelock Back Action Hammerless Sidelever Extractor Game Gun with a Side Snap Perkes Patent Hammerless Action Made in 1886 with 29 1/2" Damascus barrels, Modern Nitro Proved in London in 1992 at 850 BAR at .738 .000 & .023 (Cyl. & Mod.), Correct bore size to proof at 18.7 & 18.8mm, 2 1/2" chambers, Great wall thickness on both barrels at .031", Action flats marked "Perkes Patent No. 1968.323", The hammerless action built to Thomas Perkes patent #1968 of 1878 for Boss hammerless guns, The #323 refers to the patent use number as licensed to Boss, The barrels stamped "C.L." which means the barrels were by Charles Lancaster, The locks by Chilton, Top tang safety, Splinter forend with a Rigby lever fastener, The original straight hand stock at 15 x 1 1/2 x 2 3/8" over a 1" removable leather pad with plugs, Cast-Off for the right hand, Near exhibition wood with great color & contrast, Most likely stocked by John Robertson for Boss, Great game gun weight at 6 lbs. 14 oz., 85% engraving coverage that most certainly is done by John Thomas Sumner, Present barrel brown at 94%, It still has original case colors at 10% with a super patina, The freshened stock at 95%, The checkering at 97%, The bores & chambers are excellent plus. Here is the embodiment of 1886 Boss Quality; very sound wood with excellent figure, great weight, modern London nitro proof barrels and it comes to the hand with ease, style and grace.
