Description:
This is a black fur-trimmed cylindrical hat that has a gray-blue cloth top panel with black mohair quatrefoil, cast metal Papal crossed keys and mitre insignia, cast metal roundel, and a recently added yellow cord with side tassels. The interior of the crown has a heavily worn brown faux leather comfort band, size label in inches (“23 3/4”, about 7 1/2 in US hat size), and an old owner's label with two names; and older name written with a fountain pen and a newer name written in ballpoint pen. Originally, there would've been a short white brush plume at the front of the cap, but is missing from this example. The busby was worn as part of of the full dress Zouave uniform for both officers (with gold or yellow cord), and other ranks (with scarlet cord). A still from a 1968 Canadian documentary showing the busby being worn at an encampment parade is included. This is an interesting piece of headgear from a little-known, but fascinating military organization, and would make a great addition to any collection.
