Description:
Serial #29380, 13.7mm (.54 caliber), 36” barrel with a very good bore that has spots of dark freckling along its length. This is an interesting and seldom seen capping breechloader conversion that was adopted just prior to the widespread use of metallic cartridges by the world's armies. This example has an overall mottled, pewter-gray patina with some spots of light freckling scattered throughout. The lockplate has a partially visible Bavarian royal cypher with 1863 date and numerous Bavarian proofs on the breech. The “bolt” has interrupted locking threads with a large, top mounted loading opening and a newly made sliding dust cover that has been slightly aged to match the patina on the original metal better. The ammunition used was a paper wrapped cartridge that had an inverted musket cap embedded in the base. To load, the cartridge base was first placed on the nipple and twisted off so that the musket cap remained on the nipple, and the cartridge was then loaded through the top port. The European walnut stock has an old added oil finish with scattered minor handling marks and bruises. There are several old breaks and cracks at the wrist that have been nicely repaired with a re-applied finish at the wrist as well. The rifle has a correct, brass-tipped, replacement ramrod and is a very good example of a rare, and relatively well-designed capping breechloader that was introduced too late to influence subsequent developments.
