Description:
These are two expertly rendered ink drawings (possibly studies for a painting), executed on white gouache with some further texture added by scoring the gouache base with a finely pointed tool. The drawings depict a British Grenadier wearing a GR III cyphered mitre, and carrying full field kit; as well as a Continental Line infantryman in tricorn hat and buff faced, blue coat. The drawings are executed in the highly detailed, crosshatched style prevalent in illustration during the '60s and '70s, and are housed in matted frames measuring 9 1/8” x 16 7/8”. Both drawings are signed at the bottom in Waterhouse's distinctive manner, by incorporating the letters into the contours of the ground on which the figures stand. Charles Waterhouse (1924 – 2013) served, during World War II, in the 5th Marine Division (as a PFC) winning the Purple Heart after sustaining wounds to his neck and shoulder during the landing on Iwo Jima. Despite the nerve damage he suffered from his combat wounds, he studied art after leaving the Marine Corps, and subsequently served three tours in Vietnam as a civilian war artist. Waterhouse was honored with a reserve Major commission for his contribution to a Bicentennial project for the USMC History Division, and in 1992 became the first (and only) “USMC Artist in Residence” with promotion to Colonel. As a historical artist and illustrator, Waterhouse tended to focus on USMC and naval subject matter, but also portrayed other U.S. military and civilian historical subjects as well. This is a great chance to purchase original artwork by a celebrated combat artist who was uniquely honored by the United States Marine Corps.
