Description:
A Gentlemens flintlock pistol in excellent condition made by the famous Twigg craftsman in England . The firm operated under the Twigg name from 1783 to 1813 and this pistol is believed to have been made in 1813. The date of manufacture is confirmed by the proof marks on the barrel which are the marks used by the Birmingham Proof Company which started operating in 1813. It is in .65 caliber with a smoothbore heavy octogon 8" barrel. The overall length is 13 & 1/2". The Twigg name is shown clearly on the lock, with "London" on the top of the barrel and two proof marks on the left side of the barrel opposite the hammer. All metal is nicely blued with the lock, hammer and trigger guard retaining about 90% and the barrel about 50%. The trigger guard, lock and barrel tang are engraved. The full stock appears to be of a burl wood and is in excellent condition with just a few marks and dings and no splits, cracks, repairs or lost wood. The ramrod appears to be missing a cap at its end. The action is very strong and the hammer holds on 1/2 and full cock. There is no visible evidence of rust anywhere. There is a blank escutcheon at the top of the grip.
This is one of the nicest flintlocks I have had the pleasure to own. It has been in my colection for over 9 years.
