It fired a reloadable rimmed black power cartridge, that was ignited through a hole in its base by an external primer. The troops that had one really liked it because the rifle could be reloaded at a rate of 12 times per minute. 3-4 times faster than the best musket men. The only rifle that was better than that was the Spencer which fired a non-reloadable rimfire cartridge.
