Description:
This is a fairly modern 29 1/4” x 21 1/2”, matted frame housing an original two-page spread from the June 20, 1857 edition of “The London Illustrated News” announcing the creation of the Victoria Cross (“The New Order Of Valour”). The left panel displays the Army version with red ribbon and has six vignettes depicting acts of individual bravery by British soldiers and officers during the Crimean War. The right page has the Navy version with blue ribbon and six further vignettes depicting instances of bravery exhibited by sailors and officers of the Royal Navy. The headings, laurel leaf borders, and martial panoplies at the base of the pages are tinted brightly in red, blue, and green. Very little age toning has taken place, and the paper has retained a surprisingly white color with the tinted areas still brightly colored. This is a truly attractive display and would make a wonderful decorative accent for a library or office.
