Description:
#3812 Stocking “Bar Hammer” Single Action Pepperbox, 4”x28caliber, rare variant being made without the nipple shield and also having both the eaglehead proofing mark and the hammer patent marking. This scarce pepperbox has been refinished and while it is a well-done job, it is “too good” and in MY opinion it should probably be removed. This is easily done by the NEXT owner by using a weakened solution of muriatic acid which will ”melt off” this hot blue finish. Then it can be left to patina naturally or it can be artificially aged at the new owners discretion. The metal is sharp, the markings well pronounced, and grips are fine. A distinctive appearance and relatively scarce pepperbox made between 1847-1853. When (or if) stripped, this will be a VG+ conditioned item; currently Excellent as refinished. $1150.
