Description:
Interesting old flintlock that underwent conversion to percussion during its working life.  34" barrel appears to have been shortened at that time too - note the "LAN" at the breech end, suggesting "Lancaster".  Evidence suggests the gun started life as a full stock as there are some filled dovetails underneath the ramrod under rib.  Bore is about 58 caliber and smooth.  Did it start out a smaller caliber and rifled and get reamed out during the conversion?

Patchbox is quite ornate and functional.  Some extra screws have been added.  A few small cracks in the stock here and there but otherwise sound.  Wrist is excellent.  Nice curly maple with a rich stain makes for an attractive display gun or restoration prospect.

Overall architecture is quite pleasing.  Stock has nice lines and inlays, patchbox, etc. are all tastefully done.  Cheek piece is very nice, although the sterling silver star inlay is missing a few points. A much better than average gun in its day.

Lock is marked Boswell, Glens Falls NY and clicks up nicely. Internet research indicates there are still Boswell's in the hardware business in the Glens Falls area.

Ships for $50 nicely packed to the lower 48.
