Description:
Serial #449133, .45-70, 22” barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This is a handsome carbine that has the 1890 era modifications, and retains about 80-90% of the original blue which blends into a mellow plum-brown patina that is freckled lightly along the top of the barrel and on the “US/MODEL/1873” marked breechblock, which has visible original case-hardening still present along the exterior and brighter colors on the underside. The lock has thin pinprick pitting along the edges of the blued metal, and some further pitting on the tip of the hammer spur. The walnut stock has numerous small handling marks and minor blemishes under an armory added military oil finish that has left the “SWP/1886” cartouche crisp and clear. Small bruises are present along the forend and there is a small chip missing from the left hand side at the rear sling bar screw bolster. The stock compartment contains both a shell extractor and segmented cleaning rod, and the buttplate retains about 70-75% of the original blue finish. The second type front sight cover is in excellent condition, as is the Buffington carbine rear sight. This is a fine, late Trapdoor carbine overall, that has tight mechanics, and would make a great addition to any collection. Antique
