Description:
Lefever FE Grade 12ga with 30" Damascus barrels that have the same serial number as the frame and forend and the barrels are on face. It also features double triggers and ejectors. According to the book, "Uncle Dan LeFever by Robert W. Elliott", out of the roughly 9,000 F grade LeFevers made, most were extractor guns and ejector guns were the exception. The barrels exhibit good pattern but the need to be etched by a professional to bring back their delightful pattern. The lettering and engraving is all sharp and clean. The bird engraving on the left side features a quail flying over the top of a grassy area and the right side shows a drake mallard, complete with its white neck collar, going full tilt across the sky. The engraving on the bottom and the trigger guard is the tasteful scroll that only LeFever makes so nicely. It appears to retain the factory finish on both wood and blue and it still has the factory butt plate and grip cap. The stock is made of a perfectly cut quarter sawn piece of walnut and does not have cracks in the stock or forend. The gun is in good working order and the ejectors work well. The bores are shiny with some pitting in both barrels near the end and they have obviously been polished out to some extent. The checkering is worn, but is still in very good condition. This gun doesn't have much drop for a gun of this vintage at 1-1/2" at the comb and 2-1/2" at the heel, which are fairly modern demensions. The LOP is 14-1/4" through the original Lefever hard rubber buttplate and it has the correct grip cap. Sideplate retaining screw and trigger plate screw are good with only minor widening on the trigger plate slot. Top tang screws are good. The chambers are 2 3/4", the ribs are sound and the barrels ring wonderfully when tapped with a wooden mallet. This gun would make a fantastic restoration candidate, but I have too many projects going, so I have to let it go.
