RARE SPRINGFIELD U.S. MODEL 1880 TRIANGULAR RAMROD BAYONET TRAPDOOR RIFLE. .45-70 Govt. caliber. Only 1001 made at Springfield Armory in 1880. Serial number in the correct range. All original and correct with the exception of the breechblock which is from a later Model 1884. Buffington sight an arsenal upgrade post 1884. Otherwise and in excellent condition with 80-90% blue. Stock with a faint, partially visible “SWP” cartouche and otherwise very good plus with the original finish. Bayonet assembly with the original parts. Stock with cleaning rod trap in butt with the correct early style sliding cover. Excellent working order and very fine bore. Tested by the Army as an alternative to the socket bayonet of earlier models. Very hard to find.
