Description:
The USMC purchased 995 sniper rifles from 1966-1977.  Peter Senich's "The One Round War" page 259-262 discusses 7-digit serial numbered rifles.  USMC M40 sniper rifles with 7-digit serial numbers are part of the product improvement series.  USMC sniper rifle with serial number 6257338 (54 numbers off this one) was provided to the Army for testing (page 260).  Rifle number 6257227 is pictured and stated to have the same characteristics as a USMC issued sniper rifle. 7-digit rifles are also documented to have shipped to Sionics to be outfitted with suppressors.  Others within this serial number range were given as trophies at the Camp Perry matches and sold by the CMP.  Serial number 6257207 was awarded at Camp Perry in 1981 and two others in1979 and 1980 (page 261-262).

Remington Model 700/M40 Marine Corps sniper rifle in the Vietnam issue configuration. The rifle has a tapered, medium-heavy barrel, clip-slotted receiver and oil finished walnut stock. The stock has an integral cheekpiece and aluminum checkered buttplate embossed with the Remington logo. The rifle has an aluminum hinged floor plate and trigger guard with a black annodized finish. The barrel and receiver have a parkerized finish. The receiver is fitted with a blued Redfield base and rings. The rifle has a Redfield 3X-9X "Accu-Range" telescopic sight with black annodized tube. The scope has the unique internal range scale and double stadia wires in the top of the eyepiece with conventional, fine wire cross-hairs. The left side of the barrel is stamped with a Remington production code "UDS" over the caliber "7.62 NATO" just ahead of the receiver. The opposite side of the barrel is stamped with the Remington "R.E.P." proof and two sub-inspection marks. The left side of the receiver is roll-stamped: "U.S./6257284" on the chamber followed by "REMINGTON/MODEL 700" opposite the ejection port. The bolt is blued and has the serial number, "6257284" electro-penciled on the underside of the handle. The partial serial number "7284" is vibra-penciled on the left side of the scope base and scope tube. The telescopic sight has the Redfield name and address roll-stamped on the eyepiece. The Marines purchased 995 M40 Sniper Rifles from Remington between 1966 and 1971. These rifles were initially fitted with the green-annodized Redfield 3X-9X Accu-Range telescopic sight. Some black annodized Accu-Range scopes were purchased by the Marines as replacements in the early 1970s. The M40 sniper rifles replaced the Winchester Model 70, M1C and M1D sniper rifles used by the Marines during the early stages of the Vietnam Conflict. In 1977 the Model 40 rifles in the Marine inventory were rebuilt to M40A1 configuration with heavy barrels and fiberglass stocks; 10X Unertl USMC telescopic sights replaced the Redfield Accu-Range scopes around 1981. Unmodified examples like the aforementioned example are extremely rare.
