#8250, William Powell & Son, 13 Carrs Lane, Birmingham: A 16 Bore 2 Barrel Toplever Rebounding Hammer Bar Action Bar-in-Wood Game Gun Made in 1887 with 29" Extractor Damascus barrels, These damascus barrels were nitro proved in London in 2012 with 2 1/2" chambers, Then in 1977 Powell fit a set of 28" steel barrels with 2 3/4" chambers: The original damascus barrels at .679 .002 & .002", (Cyl. & Cyl), 2 1/2" chambers, Wall thickness on the right at .024" & the left .022" (London Nitro Proved in 2012): The Powell 1977 steel barrels at .663 .009 & .020", (Skt.II & Imp.Mod.), 2 3/4" chambers, Wall thickness on the right at .030" & the left .031" (Birmingham Nitro Proved in 2012 to 2 3/4"): Dovetail lump barrels, Dolls head extension, Double triggers, Dolphin style hammers, Percussion fences, Splinter forend with an Anson release, Straight hand stock at 14 5/8 x 1 7/16 x 2" over a 3/4" removable leather pad with plugs, Slight Cast-Off for the right hand, Game gun weight at 6 lbs. with the damascus barrels and 6 lbs. 3 oz. with the steel barrels, Nice wood with good black/brown contrast, Border engraving, This piece remains in very nice condition since it came to these shores from England in April of 2013, The gun remains in 99% since it was completely gone over in England recently, The bores are bright & shiny chamber to muzzle on both sets of barrels, Both sets of barrels ring with a pronounced chime, Stanton rebounding locks from patent #367 of 1867, Purdey bolting from patent #1104 of 1863, Scott's spindle patent #2752 of 1865, Anson's forend release patent #3791 of 1872. The forend has 2 edge repairs that are almost impossible to see. It is cased in the original leather trunk with the original Powell trade label plus the original key, the interior nicely re-lined and set up for both barrels. This is a nice set-up with both barrels in proof and completely brought back with very nice detail to workmanship and finish plus it is a 16 Bore. //////////////////////////////////// William Powell has been in the trade since 1802 and it became "& Son" in 1847. The strength of this firm lasted through five generations of the same family. In 1938 Powell worked with Stoeger Arms in New York to distribute and sell their sporting guns.
