Description:
This is a handsome dagger that measures 7” overall with a 4 1/4” double-edged, spearpoint blade having acid etched playing cards and “Four Aces” on the obverse, “The Duke” on the reverse with “R. Alldeon/Memphis Tenn.” just ahead of the deeply scalloped double choils. The steel has a dull gray patina throughout with mild gray-black freckling, concentrated mostly at the edges and on exposed metal on the hilt. The riveted ivory grips are in very good shape with pleasant, tan and off-white age toning, and stable age cracks along the visible grain. The dagger comes with its original riveted leather sheath which has numerous surface scuffs, flaking, and verdigris at the rivets, but is still supple and intact nevertheless. R. Alldeon is a known Memphis maker who dates to the late 1850s/early 1860s, and was associated with both the riverboat trade and some privately purchased Confederate edged weapons. This example is a fantastic piece, from a compelling point in American history, and would make a stellar addition to any collection of 19th century American knives, Civil War artifacts, or gambling items.
